The Barbell Bear Post 14th Edition was released earlier this week. The 14th edition of the post, which is a newsletter created by Shelbyville Strength Coordinator Royce Carlton, features columns written by senior Emma Nolley and sophomore Brock Kuhn.

I first signed up for fitness my freshman year out of obligation for my sport, not having a clue what it was. At first, I hated it and I did not take it seriously, because it isn’t something that I had ever had an interest in before. Once I started, to see results and how it improved my athletic performance I got on board.

I started to appreciate my time in the weight room and find enjoyment in the workouts that I was doing. Now as a senior, I look back and am so grateful that I took this class, because it has improved my strength and agility, helped me make new friends and brought a positive vibe to my days. I recommend anyone going into high school to sign up for fitness.

Coming in as a freshman last year, I didn’t enjoy lifting weights at first. I was just going through the motions. But soon I realized that I enjoyed weightlifting and wanted to grow as much as I possibly could, not only physically but mentally as well. The atmosphere in the weight room is very special. When you look around you see your peers pushing themselves as hard as they possibly can. Everyone is positive and supports one another.

I’ve witnessed myself grow on and off the field. The weight room has not only brought me a lot of confidence, but it has helped me become a better all-around athlete. I’ve watched my teammates grow on and off the field as well. The program that Coach Carlton has created is truly amazing. I can’t wait to see just how much I grow physically and mentally in my next two years of high school.

It’s ugly and unfair to compare Vladimir Putin with the leadership of the Indiana General Assembly. But how else can we explain the crass stupidity and irresponsible bullying Hoosiers have ignored from a super-majority now bent on destroying civility and democracy in Indiana?
